You get a notification that a container has been <strong>Discharged<\/strong> at the terminal. You think, <em>&quot;Great, the clock has started. Time to get this moved.&quot;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p>You email your broker,  ping your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maersk.com\/logistics-explained\/transportation-and-freight\/2024\/07\/05\/drayage\">drayage <\/a>dispatcher,  check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visiwise.co\/terminals\/\">terminal<\/a> website, &#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>But then the roadblocks appear:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Broker:<\/strong> &#8220;Commercial Invoice had a typo. Customs hasn&#8217;t released it yet.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Trucker:<\/strong> &#8220;I don&#8217;t have a driver available until Friday.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Terminal:<\/strong> &#8220;No pickup appointment slots available for 48 hours.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Warehouse:<\/strong> &#8220;We are full. We can&#8217;t take this until next week.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>By the time you solve these issues, the container has been sitting on the asphalt for 5 days. The free time clock has expired. You are now paying demurrage.This wasn&#8217;t a &quot;port issue.&quot; This was a <strong>timing issue.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<h3><strong>The &#8220;5 Days Before&#8221; Rule<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>In my experience analyzing thousands of shipments, I\u2019ve found that 90% of demurrage isn&#8217;t caused by operational failures at the terminal. <strong>It is caused by gaps that occurred while the ship was still at sea.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<p>If you start working on a container when it hits the ground, you have lost your buffer.The most successful import managers operate on what I call the <strong>&quot;5 Days Before&quot; Rule<\/strong>. They ensure the paperwork is done AND the logistics are lined up five days before the vessel ETA.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3><strong>The 2 Silent Killers of Your Supply Chain<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>There are two categories of risks that eat up your free time. You need to solve both before arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4><strong>1. The Administrative Gap (The Paperwork)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n<p>These are the bureaucratic hurdles that stop the container from being &quot;Available.&quot;<\/p>\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Missing ISF\/ACI Filing:<\/strong> If this isn&#8217;t accepted days before arrival, you are guaranteed a customs hold.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Unpaid Freight Invoice:<\/strong> Carriers are strict. No money, no release. Wire transfers take time\u2014don&#8217;t wait until discharge to initiate them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Original Bill of Lading (OBL):<\/strong> If the OBL hasn&#8217;t been surrendered, that container is legally stuck.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h4><strong>2.
